As temperatures dropped in the 40's this past evening, you can certainly feel a crispness in the air. The goldenrods are blooming and the sea oats are turning a golden brown. With water temperatures still in the 70's, you see the occasional vacationer catching some rays. It's my favorite time on the island. No humidity, sweatshirts being mandatory, even a blanket to bundle up with for the golf cart rides...is a welcome change.

The effects of Tropical Storm Hannah impacted Bald Head Island around 1am on Saturday morning on an almost high tide. With wind gusts up to 78 mph reported on South Beach, damage was minimal. After riding the island yesterday, the usual damage was blown out screens and the occasional missing shingle not to mention limbs and some tree damage through the maritime forest and golf course. The worst damage occured at Snowy Egret Trail and South Bald Head Wynd where the ocean overwash can be seen. Even this was not too bad, two homes on South Beach in this area have standing water underneath them, and overwash debris is present. South and West Beach look pretty much unchanged. Possibly even some build up along the Peppervine Area. I will post some pictures here tomorrow so check back.

All in all, things are getting back to normal. The Club and restaurants are open once again, the roads are being cleaned and debris removed. The road along the club is covered like a dusting of snow (but its sand). Kinda fun driving through it, must be like the old days on the island.

Lets hope for an uneventful remainder of Hurricane Season 2008. Rod.
